Tourist tax

Automatic tourist tax collection for rentals in Italy

Maurice calculates the tourist tax (tassa di soggiorno) for every booking using your Comune’s rules and has the guest pay it by card during online check-in, before arrival. No cash to ask for at the door: secure card payments, paid straight to you, ready for when you pay it over to the municipality.

  • Calculated per guest, per night
  • Age exemption and maximum nights
  • Paid by card during check-in
  • Cash payments marked as paid

Tourist tax collected before the guest arrives

Set your Comune’s rule once. From then on Maurice calculates, asks and collects for every booking.

Your Comune’s rules

Set the amount per person per night, the age below which guests are exempt and the maximum number of taxable nights, as your municipal regulation states.

Automatic calculation

For each booking Maurice works out the amount from the number of guests, their ages and the nights. No spreadsheets, no mental arithmetic.

Card payment

Guests pay by card during online check-in, with secure payments paid straight to you along with your other payments.

Paid in cash? Mark it

If a guest prefers to pay on site, you mark the tax as paid in cash so your records stay straight.

Channel exceptions

If a platform already collects the tax for you, set an exception for that channel so the guest pays it only once.

Explained in the guest’s language

If a guest doesn’t know what the tourist tax is or why they’re paying it, they ask in the chat and Maurice explains in their language.

How tourist tax collection works with Maurice

  1. 01

    Set your Comune’s rule

Amount per guest per night, exemption age, maximum taxable nights and any channel exceptions, as set in your Comune’s regulation.

  2. 02

    Maurice calculates the amount

For each booking, based on how many guests there are, their ages and the number of nights.

  3. 03

    The guest pays during check-in

Card payment is one of the steps of the online check-in for rentals in Italy. Access instructions are released once check-in is complete, so the tax is settled before the guest walks in, unless they pay in cash.

  4. 04

    You have the full picture

The dashboard shows the payments collected, and you can export your data whenever you need it.

Who pays and who remits: what Italian law says

Guests pay the tourist tax (formally imposta di soggiorno), but the accommodation manager, including whoever runs a short-term rental, is responsible for payment of the tax, with a right of recourse against the guest (art. 180 of Decree-Law 34/2020). The manager then pays it over to the Comune and files an annual return online by 30 June of the following year. Rates, exemptions and payment deadlines are set by each Comune in its own regulation.

All the details are in our guide to the Italian tourist tax for short-term rentals.

Why collect it online, before arrival

  • No cash at the door: with self check-in there’s often nobody there to hand it to, and asking afterwards is always awkward.
  • No surprises for the guest: they know what they owe before they travel and can ask questions through 24/7 guest messaging.
  • Everything in one place: the amount reaches you together with your other guest payments and rent and paid extras.
  • One step for the guest: in the same check-in, Maurice also collects the data for Alloggiati Web automation.

Frequently asked questions

How do I set my Comune’s rates?

In the property settings you enter the amount per person per night, the age below which guests are exempt and the maximum number of taxable nights, as your Comune’s regulation sets them. Always check the current amount on your Comune’s website, as rates can change.

What if the guest wants to pay in cash?

You can mark the tax as paid in cash on site, so you always know who has paid and who hasn’t. Remember, though, that if a guest doesn’t pay, the manager remains responsible towards the Comune: collecting online before arrival is the simplest way to avoid surprises.

What about bookings where the platform has already collected the tax?

In some municipalities a platform may collect the tourist tax on the host’s behalf. To make sure the guest doesn’t pay twice, set an exception for that channel and Maurice leaves those bookings out of the collection. Check with your Comune and the platform which arrangements apply in your city.

Are age exemptions calculated automatically?

Yes. If you set the exemption age your Comune provides for, Maurice leaves younger guests out of the calculation, based on the data collected in the online check-in.

I don’t live in Italy. Where does the money go?

Straight to you, wherever you live. Guest payments, including tourist tax and extras, are secure card payments paid directly to you, and every amount is visible in the dashboard. You or your local accountant then pay the tax to the Comune on the due dates.
